Whoa. The Internet may be the final “free” frontier out there, but this certainly doesn’t ensure quality. Everything from ancient web pages summoned from the dawn of the ‘Net to little Susie’s first site is roaming around. These are full of disorganization, pitiful designs, and just bad coding.
DON’T DO THIS!
Yeah, so I can’t stress that enough. Don’t be one of those people. It doesn’t help you get anywhere if you’re trying to make a name for your company, and it doesn’t help you sell anything either. I’ve done a little searching and come up with some of the worst Web practices that you should avoid like the plague. Here we go…
Sick.
Some of the worst offenders suffer from the following ills:
- Pathetic Images
- Poor writing
- Dark backgrounds that ruin legibility
- Painfully slow loading times
- Cross-browser (in)compatiblity
Let’s start with images. A picture says a thousand words. When you have bad pictures, this might be closer to a thousand curses or perhaps a thousand terrible jokes. Make sure your images  are appropriate for your industry, have the proper resolution, and exemplify clarity. If you can’t tell what you’re looking at or it doesn’t enhance your message, throw it out!
The Pen is Mightier…
Poor writing is next. When your site content sounds like it was written by a five year old child, no one is going to take you seriously. Make sure to find a writer that has a solid grasp on the English language and a little bit of flare, even words aren’t your cup of tea. Pictures and videos may form the first impression, but this is a close second. This is the meat and potatoes of your message, so don’t mess this one up!
Dark backgrounds that affect legibility, excruciating loading times, and cross-browser incompatibility are all an important way to round out any bad website. Don’t go there! A bad background can make text impossible to read, and loading times that take longer than Christmas hurt your marketing to an extreme extent. Your bounce rates will probably bounce straight through the atmosphere in this case.
Don’t Fire Fox
Finally, if you don’t optimize for multiple browsers, you could end up cutting yourself off from an entire demographic segment of customers or visitors.Â
Yes, it is that bad. So don’t do these things and you’ll be way better off! :)
