Three Ways to Get Better Testimonials for Your Internet Business Marketing

The power of testimonials for internet business marketing lies in the trust they create.

All you have to do is look at the explosion of review sites on the Web to understand just how much importance we place on the opinions of random strangers. When it comes to internet business marketing, testimonials are king.

Why are testimonials so important to internet business marketing?

Customers know what you’re up to – They know you’re trying to sell them. Ever been hit on by a person in a bar who just won’t let up? That’s how a lot of customers feel about advertising and marketing. If they don’t know you, they don’t trust you, and they’re just going to tune out your advances.

However … if that person at the bar is a friend of a friend who gives them a glowing recommendation, suddenly their advances start to look less creepy and sort of adorable. That’s the power of testimonials.

Because customers realize that testimonial-givers have no reason to lie (they’re not making money, after all), they automatically trust testimonials more than your marketing materials. Testimonials build trust and interest in a way other marketing tactics just can’t match.

Some hurdles you have to overcome to get testimonials

Giving a testimonial seems so easy – so WHY is it so hard to get them? Here are a few common reasons:

  1. Writing a testimonial takes time. Even though it’s only one minute, a lot of people will drop out of the process simply because they’re busy.
  2. People get intimidated trying to write a review. They might love your company, but if they aren’t confident in their writing abilities, you’re not getting that testimonial.
  3. Some people are quite contentious about their privacy and don’t want their names, pictures or words used.

How to get better testimonials for your internet business marketing

You’ve got to overcome the hurdles listed above if you want to get more testimonials to use on your website and in your other marketing materials. Here’s how you do it.

Make it a one-step process

Don’t make people go through more than one or two steps at most to give you a testimonial. You’re looking for a “type-submit” scenario, not something where they have to answer a bunch of questions first or enter their name and email.

Give directions

Writing is a scary thing to people who don’t do it every day. When we ask for testimonials here at GetUWired, we always include directions such as “Just a sentence or two will do!” as well as a timeline “Could you take one minute to leave us a review?” These take the pressure off and give the customer guidelines as to what we’re looking for.

Make sure you’re ASKING!

It’s not often people are going to leave you a review of their own volition – unless, of course, they are furious with you, then you can bet they’re going to air their grievances online and to everyone they know.

So make sure you’re ASKING for reviews! Ask for them on your homepage. Ask for them in your email marketing materials. Ask for them on social media. The more you ask, the more reviews you’re going to get. Remember – you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Write the review for them

I got this brilliant idea from an article on the Infusionsoft blog, “Getting the Best Testimonials from Clients to Use in Your Marketing.”

When you’re dealing with a client, either on the phone, in person, or via email, take notes on things they say about your company that you could use in your marketing. Then send them the snippet you wrote down and ask if you can use it as a testimonial. All they have to do is say yes – how easy is that?

Allow anonymous reviews

The anonymous review is a double-edged sword.

For one, an anonymous review doesn’t hold as much weight because they’re more likely to be fake. Also, when you give the public the ability to review your products and services accountability-free, you open yourself up to internet trolls and competitors who just want to make trouble.

That being said, if you give only your trusted customers the ability to post anonymously, you’re likely to get more reviews from privacy-conscious people. You can do this through your email marketing campaigns. The reviews won’t be anonymous to you, but the fact that they will be posted anonymously can be reassuring to those concerned about privacy issues.
